Get your free video course here: Five Ways to Make Fasting Easier

Dec 31, 2021

Heads Up: The weekend of the 15-16th January I am leading an online guided fast. Zoom sessions to inspire and support you, as well as support materials are included. More details to follow in the next few days.

In this episode I talk about the biggest New Year fasting mistake you can make. Here it is: not understanding the interplay between discomfort and pleasure. You see, most people have a very dysfunctional attitude to the place of both discomfort and pleasure in their lives.

PLEASURE is seen as illicit, something that you cannot just allow yourself. There is surface excitement in taking pleasure when you apparently shouldn’t. Is excess the only form of pleasure you are allowing yourself? Did you know that there are other ways to get true pleasure from eating?

DISCOMFORT is the punishment for having sought pleasure. This is not just evident in fasting, but wellness as a whole: look at extreme programs like Insanity. Push yourself to the limits and you can purify yourself of the excess pleasure you committed. You can see how intermittent fasting and extended fasts can get misused in this swing between the two opposites. You can see an illustration of this Metronome here

Both discomfort and pleasure have very useful roles in our lives, and the key to stilling The Metronome is to reframe both of them and stop misusing them!

I explain how in this episode.
