Weight loss is probably the number one reason people fast, but in this episode I am going to reveal the conundrum inherent in fasting for weight loss. If you can understand this, you can make fasting and intermittent fasting a much more effective AND empowering tool for shapeshifting.
People think that weight loss is simple, and they are just bad at implementing the simple rules (either calories in/out or carbs are the devil).
Both of these ideas are incredible oversimplifications.
Why Weight Loss Is Not As Simple As You Think
#1 The whole idea of shedding fat has been corrupted.
1.1 You see, this is so inextricably tied up with body shame. We have all met people who are in enviable shape, and still hate their bodies. You can never win when you use slimming down as a tool to cure body hatred.
1.2 It is very oversimplified. In Think Like A Rocket Scientist, Ozan Varol says
We all long for absolutes; action and reaction, and neat cause and effect relationships where A inexorably leads to B
1.3 Punishing yourself into change has become acceptable as the only way to achieve the transformation you long for.
#2 Managing your weight is about insulin, not calories.
Dr Jason Fung in his book The Obesity Code says
“I can make anybody fat. How? By prescribing insulin. It won’t matter that you have willpower, or that you exercise. It won’t matter what you choose to eat. You will get fat. It’s simply a matter of enough insulin and enough time.”
If you count calories, 100 cals of avocado equals 100 cals of sugar. The truth is that one has a drastically different effect on your insulin levels to the other.
#3 Carbohydrates play a more complicated role in our lives than you might like to think. Social events often have processed carbs as the centrepiece. Are you going to forego the carb fest and take some carrot sticks to much on in fake celebration?
Another non nutritional job many people use carbs for is to manage difficult situations. Hate your job? Eat junk. Argument with your spouse? Head for the deli.
Demonising carbs in order to stop using them as emotional support does not work.

Understand The Difference Between Fool’s Gold Motivation (FGM) and Empowered Motivation (EM)
FGM provides a reason to fast that you are going to rebel against.
EM is any source of motivation that sees you through your very natural resistance. Let me give you an example:
Eclipse thinking is when you achieve a goal by focusing on something else. For many people, weight is their sun goal; their dearest wish. If you focus on something else instead of look directly at the main goal, you can get the benefit of BOTH like I did.
For example, defocusing on the 5lb loss you want your next fast to deliver and instead turning your attention to the awesome longterm health benefits, of which there are many.
The Final Piece of The Puzzle: Inconsistency
If you can make fasting easier and more empowering, you are more likely to do it more often.
